Nigel Spicer

Nigel trained in London and after qualifying in 1981, he worked at two of the leading City litigation practices. He came to Winchester in 1990 and joined Godwins as a partner in 2006. He now specialises not only in litigation/dispute resolution, but also in employment law and family law. His clients are broad ranging and have included individuals, businesses, institutions and Government Departments.

Nigel takes great pride in helping all of his clients in a friendly and constructive way, particularly if they are going through difficult periods in their personal or business lives. His sensible and practical approach to matters has often meant that clients have avoided the necessity of expensive and protracted Court or Tribunal proceedings and he is well versed in the kind of alternative dispute resolution methods that are now superseding the traditional courtroom approach. However, when called upon, Nigel is highly adept and experienced in dealing with Court proceedings. He has acted for clients at all levels, from the County Court, the Family Court, right up to the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords (now the Supreme Court). He has also successfully assisted a serving officer in petitioning Her Majesty The Queen.

Nigel enjoys a particularly varied practice - within the area of litigation he handles negligence claims, contractual disputes, partnership disputes, problems with neighbours and probate matters, as well as niche areas such as chancel repair liability. When advising on employment law, he acts for both employers and employees and deals with anything and everything from drafting contracts of employment and policies/procedures, to handling redundancies, unfair dismissal and other types of claim.

Nigel also enjoys and continues to develop his family law practice (not just divorce, but cohabitation agreements, pre or post nuptial agreements and separation agreements etc too). He is a member of Resolution, an organisation of family law professionals who believe in a constructive, non-confrontational approach. Nigel is also a Collaborative Family Lawyer and will be very happy to explain the Collaborative Law process as a possible settlement option.

Outside the office, Nigel enjoys family life, the arts , flyfishing and anything that involves messing around in boats!

Nigel is a member of Resolution, whose 6,500 members are family lawyers and other professionals committed to the constructive resolution of family disputes. Their members follow a Code of Practice that promotes a non-confrontational approach to family problems. Their members encourage solutions that consider the needs of the whole family - and in particular the best interests of children.

Nigel is a Member of Collaborative Family.
